I guess it’ll be up to each company to either find an internal substitute, reorganize the function for the duration of sabbatical, or bring on board a “sabbatical cover.” The latter is the preferred scenario in my view, because it would help jumpstart the virtuous cycle where young graduates gain the first line on their resumes, while company’s minimize the risk of hiring “untested talent” — given that the assignment is temporary.
